Touching Ancient Baja: Cave Paintings and Baby Whales

The Cave Paintings of Baja California and Grey Whales This is a bespoke adventure not only to the remote UNESCO World Heritage cave paintings in the mountains of Baja California, in Mexico, but also includes two days at an off-the-beaten-path lagoon where the Grey Whales first initiated contact with humans 40 years ago, and continue to do so. We begin in the historic town of Loreto on the Sea of Cortez, the first European settlement in what was then California, in 1697. This will be our home base and a perfect place to slow down to “Baja Time”, explore the protected marine park and gear up for our expedition. We’ll return here after our adventure to share stories and relax before going back to “civilization”. Our excursion to the cave paintings is to enter a world that exists pretty much as it did in the late 1700’s. We will not

Monarch Butterfly Migration

The Great Mexican Migrations Part 1 : The Monarch Butterfly   An exciting adventure to experience one of the most important and mysterious migration phenomena on our planet - the grueling and courageous migration of the Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) into central Mexico. The monarch butterfly may be the most widely recognized of all American butterflies with its distinct orange, black, and white wings. While beautiful, this coloring actually sends a warning to predators that the monarch is foul tasting and poisonous. Every year, hundreds of millions of these butterflies make an astonishing 3000 mile journey in the fall from the eastern Rockies in the U.S. to their wintering grounds in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Mexico. We will ride silently on horseback through the luxuriant woods where monarchs are decorating their favorite trees in huge, colorful clusters, and flying in clouds through the forest. This is an adventure that

Botswana Zimbabwe Adventure 2019

Botswana Zimbabwe Adventure Timeless Baja is excited to present our Botswana/Zimbabwe Adventure. This is a customized, or bespoke tour specifically designed for our small group, with personalized attention. It is to one of the best places in the world to experience animals in their own habitat, up-close-and-personal. If you are interested in a wildlife safari, then this trip is one of the very best you can find, anywhere, and more intimate. In addition, we’ll begin with some time in a little town most tourists overlook, Maun, in northern Botswana. Maun is fascinating for its glimpse into the Botswana culture, and that of some of the tribal people who live there. Then, after 9 days on one of the last real semi-luxury mobile safaris, we’ll arrive at Victoria Falls and stay at an historic, elegant Colonial inn right above the Falls. Please see the map, below, for the areas we will

Scouting Adventure in Namibia

Deborah Stephens lived in Botswana and knows it well, which is why we have our annual safaris there (and because it’s the place in the world to see animals in their own environment!). Often, the group likes to continue exploring after the safari, and this year we are going to Namibia! This is a scouting trip for Deb, and she has opened it up for those who would like to accompany her. We have planned all details and have professional guides, but it is a little more flexible; not as organized as our safari - you’ll be exploring new territory with us - and therefore, we are keeping our costs low to reflect this. Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world…untouched, untamed and simply amazing, Namibia is all about the landscapes. It’s alien-like terrain will make you think of Mars or the moon. Expect

Guadalupe Valley Private Winery Tour

This is a private tour just for our small group of some of the smaller, boutique wineries in Valle de Guadalupe in northern Baja, between the cities of Ensenada and Tecate!   Here, we’ll find a great variety of wines, many award-winning, including French and Italian. I first visited the valley in 1994, when there were just a few vineyards, and it has now mushroomed to become the largest wine growing area in all of Mexico! The Valle also has a very fascinating history which we can still see remnants of. It was the route of gold miners who went through here in the 1870s and 1880s, and before that, a mission was established in 1834 (Baja’s last, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe) and produced wheat, olives, pears, and grapes - the grapes for wine production - the first in the Valle. In fact the mission was referred to as the peninsula’s
